Surgery is one of the three main pillars of cancer treatment in both human and veterinary medicine. The veterinary nurse plays a vital role in all aspects of surgical oncology, whether supporting owners during a difficult cancer diagnosis and potentially confusing pre-surgical discussions, to providing the anaesthesia, analgesia and post-operative care to the patient. Compassionate care throughout the cancer journey is vital.
Focusing on nursing care, the course with Jen O’Keeffe and Sarah Holliday explores the anaesthesia considerations and peri-surgical support when treating cancer in veterinary patients. With owners expecting a similar level of care to that seen in human oncology, we discuss newer, minimally invasive surgical approaches now used in referral settings to provide knowledgeable guidance to owners and the best possible care to cancer patients. Post-operative considerations for oncologic surgeries with top tips and techniques to aid a smooth, comfortable recovery are also discussed, as well as the ongoing support to families following surgical intervention.
